A few weeks ago I was told a kitchen tip that has changed the way I deal with my favourite spices - turmeric and ginger.
When preparing them I found that I would waste so much of the precious root, taking off the skin. The solution is simple -
Take a small spoon (they are easier to manipulate) and scrape the skin off. It should come away easily and leave you with just the inside root. Be aware that fresh turmeric will stain your hands, so pop gloves on unless you want to wear that lovely yellow/orange hue for a while!
Simple, less waste and easy!
